When students are introduced to a new set of words, a lesson should begin with a model by the teacher, small group activities and eventually students working independently with the words. Word sorts can include a variety of different activities including small group sorting, buddy sorts, blind sorts, writing sorts, blind writing sorts, word hunts, speed sorts, games, draw and label cut and paste activities in addition to others. The words used should be words that students find confusing and will be able to develop an understanding of the words while sorting. When choosing the words for a word sort, the words should include at least two contrasts in sounds, patterns, or meanings. They can sort words by sound, pattern, and meaning, which reflect the three layers of English orthography (p.56). There are three different ways students can sort words. When students recognize patterns in familiar words, they are able to apply the patterns to new words they come across in their reading. The central component of a word study is the process of sorting words, which includes being able to sort words by sound and by sight or spelling patterns.
